Campaign 3 Session 4
The party investigates an ancient city in pursuit of the Shady Motherfuckers.Summary
The Fourth Act arrive at the Ruins of Tawnos, ruins of a keep and surrounding town from the Three King's War. Thre are cliffs and ruins which are on top of a fairly extensive cave network. The location's original intent was to hide troup movement. Nearby is an artificial cliff called the Crack. The eldest king owned the keep, while the middle brother had seiged the keep; the elder king's mages unleashed a massive spell on the middle brother's army, creating the Crack. This was used by the middle brother's mages to fuel a blood ritual to summon a horrible creature of unknown identity. Deposited a couple hours outside of the ruins, the party and Merely make their way toward them. Between the conflict itself and time, the area is relatively lush vegetation and overgrown piles of rubble. In what appears to have been a town square, the party finds a small group of people. One of the people is seated in a chair under a large umbrella, a small table and several attendants and guards nearby. The one seated at the chair, wearing armor, is the only person who isn't a skeleton. The party decides to give the man a wide berth.
Entering the remains of the keep, they find the remains of an audience chamber being reclaimed by nature, a throne with a tree growing around and over it. The area directly in front of the throne is clear. Three skeletons are stationed in the room as well. After so much debate about what to do, they decide to destroy the skeletons in an attempt to clear the room to investigate it for entrances to the caves. The skeletons are destroyed easily, prompting confusion among the party. They decide that the man presumably in control of the skeletons is probably not going to be much of a threat, so they take the opportunity to search the room before potentially confronting the man. The patch of ground that does not have plant growth is thicker than the surrounding ground, but not an entrance. As they make their investigation, the skeleton man approaches with his entourage—as they approach, they realize it's actually a woman.
She explains that there is a tomb beneath the keep that had undead within that were in need of being laid to rest. The Queen of Zant, one of the houses of the three kings, cursed her former guard for their inability to protect her and her children. Going through the tomb itself would likely invite fighting seven relatively powerful undead. They could also attempt to find the path the SMF have been using, though they currently have no leads on that. There is also a two-headed dragon living in the one known cave entrance into the tunnels. She also offers knowledge of a path through the Underdark that might allow them entrance into the tomb, bypassing the guards, though the Underdark is a danger itself. They decide their best option is probably the direct approach through the undead. Liscena magically unseals the tomb, the spot of ground they had noted earlier, and the group descends.
