Campaign 3 Session 13

The party completes the Wrathful Alter.

Summary

Completing a short rest, the party continues around the path toward the next room. The bridge is crumbling and scary, but otherwise easily traversed. At the next room they see a few golden ghosts, one of which is particularly fancy, are being attacked by purplish-red ghosts wielding improvized weapons. The glaive-wielding ghost appears and explains that the bomb set off by the lone soldier was far more deadly than expected. Whether through a chain reaction or because it was simply stronger than thought, there was a significant amount of colateral damage. The commander of the golden forces said that it was worth the cost, which angered the civilians; it was decided that he was not truly on their side. The party agrees, and joins the fight on the side of the angry mob.

The commander staggers and falls back as a squad of further soldiers appear. The civilians and glaive-wielding ghost engage in combat again. Another ghost fades into view, singing a song in an unfamiliar language, causing the combatants to hesitate and then vanish. It is explained that the uprising was seen as rebelion. The Songstress brought words of peace, urging them to lay down arms, but things were never the same.

After another short rest to allow Dorean to catch her breath, the group finds their path blocked. Mira goes back through the room to turn the wheels in each of the rooms to raise the central platform of the room. The final room is filled with sand, though the level seems much lower than it should have been, though it does seem a safeguard against teleportation spells. On a central platform is a statue resembling the Songstress holding a bardiche, the spectral wielder of the weapon beside it. The lone soldier, enemy commander, and allied commander are all beside him in position to be executed. He offers the spectral polearm to Dorean and asks which head he should take: the commander who commanded the placement of the bomb and potentially provided a stronger than necessary weapon, the enemy commander who started the conflict in the first place, the lone soldier who placed the bomb, or himself, who did not go to market with his sister, potentially leading to her death. Dorean executes the allied commander after thinking it through. The sand begins to drain revealing numerous headless corpses preserved by the sand. The ghost regards the weapon and offers her words of caution, to temper her anger or follow his own path, then he fades. Dorean considers his words for a few moments, then takes the real weapon from the statue's hands. The weapon fills her with strong emotions, and she recognizes that its name is Wrath.

Luna and Vera find the Songstress familiarish. Luna inspects the statue and finds that it looks a fair bit like Sapphire. Vera says that Sapphire is from Wolis and not a shard, so it's strange that a statue from a shard would look like her. As they leave, the party discusses whether they would like to meet alternate reality versions of themselves. Outside, the reunite with the raven; Dorean feels unsettled and slightly intimidated by his lingering gaze on the weapon. Vera tells the raven about their adventure, then that they're going back to where they found the boat. The raven leaves to meet them at the airship. The party reaches the boat spot as the sun is setting and is looking around when they see unfamiliar small boot prints. A mass of vines and thorns errupt from the surrounding plants, restraining Vera, Dorean, Ward, and Henrietta. Two topiary dogs appear as well. A dark-skinned, horned humanoid stands on a rock above them, staff and sickle in hand, glowering down at them.
