The party enters the Wrathful Altar at the behest of Vera's raven friend, learning the history of the temple as they fight their way through ghosts to the center.
Summary
Ward ritual casts Detect Magic and detects only the residue of magic around the tower, though the tower itself is not magical. As they are about to enter, the raven alights on the door, and Eck, Luna, and Mira can remember the raven when it's not around. Rocky entrance, intended to be a yawning pit with no handrails, but the bottom fo the shard is 4o feet down. Four platforms with chains attached to a middle platform. There is a stone plaque on the wall near the entrance. Ward uses Comprehend Languages. The magic struggles to translate the foreign language, due to being from a shard, but it does come through. "Though it is not evil, we imprisoned it here and named it sin." Dorean and Vera search around the area while waiting, finding that the air is uncomfortably still and the path is crumbling in some places. On the first platform they find a turn wheel thing words sticking out of sand piled in the middle. Skeletons dressed in military-style uniforms burst out of the sand and attack them. Once all of the skeletons and spectre were killed, the turnwheel unlocks. Another spectre forms, a young man wielding a glaive or similar polearm, and observes that they've met the enemy. He says he will meet them further ahead, and disappears down the walkway. The party takes a short rest and follows.
At the next platform, another golden ghost appears, similarly wearing a military outfit that differs from the violent spirits. He is fighting the blue spirits, locked in eternal combat. The party also engages, barely managing to defeat the ghosts. Once the combat subsides, the golden ghost goes to a corner and messes with something that they cannot see. The first golden ghost reappears and explains that the enemy base was in their town. A lone soldier arrived and planted an explosive with the intention of destroying or incapacitating the enemy. The explosion killed many in the marketplace, including the ghost's sister. A golden ghost girl runs through, light errupts from the corner, and the ghosts vanish. The wheel unlocks. As the party rests again, Vera checks on Dorean; Dorean is unwilling to discuss things, but does pat her on the head.
The next platform contains even more enemies, the fighting involving more golden ghosts, putting the blue ghosts on their back foot. The soldier from before appears griefstricken. The party engages once again. Ward notices that the enemy commander is taunting the allied fighter for killing their own, while the allied side says that they were left with no choice. As the wraiths are defeated, the initial golden ghost appears and explains that the soldier who planted the bomb acted on leaked plans, learning that the enemy had been driven there by desperation and were going to take an action that was detrimental to those living there. They admitted that both sides were acting out of desperation, then all of the ghosts continued down the path.
