Campaign 3 Session 1

Adventurers with the Fourth Act pursue what will most undoubtedly be thought of as humble beginnings, infiltrating a goblin cave in pursuit of a simple medicinal herb.

Summary

Schneva Vahsken-Issai Raeba Zost Eideck—known as Eck by their friends—is a small kobold with shiny ice-blue scales. A goblin is in a crude saddle mounted on a blue dragon wyrmling and pinning Vera to the rotten boards being called a bridge. They attempt to hit the dragon, but find its scales to be rather too hard, so aims a second blow at the goblin, landing a solid blow. The goblin attempts to retaliate with a crudely made spear, missing entirely.

Mira, holding a goblin in a headlock, while another goblin attempts to pull free that goblin, while a third goblin pulls on the second goblin to help. Mira bonks her goblin on the head a couple of times. The held goblin attempts to escape, but fails. The second goblin bites Mira, and the third attempts to use this chance to free their friend; they fail.

Ward is dealing with a goblin mage attempting to stab him. He retaliates by making the goblin literally roll on the floor laughing. Meanwhile Luna has a goblin around her neck attempting to eat her hair. Luna extricates herself from that situation because that is very gross. Veracity, pinned by a dragon, becomes a brown bear to get it off of her, then also proceeds to miss the dragon with her attacks. Dorean, facing a pair of goblin twins, attacking her with shared movements.

Combat continues. Ward requests for nonlethal damage rather than wanton murder. A kobold in a cage and the dragon wyrmling demand that the party leave. Eck explains that they just want Super Chamomile which is apparently in this cave. Neither of them know where it is, but do explain that they aren't allied with the goblins so please stop. Eck decides to try to free the kobold from the cave instead, successfully punching it to pieces. The remaining goblins are nonlethally knocked unconscious.

In a cave half a day from Voldaire. Came by train from the city of Mograh, where the Fourth Act is currently set up. They were tasked with retrieving Super Chamomile for one of the actresses. The wrong things were said at the wrong times and a brawl broke out. Eck offers to help the kobold recapture the dragon, who turns down the offer. He digs an obviously fake piece of jewelry from a nearby hay stack and calls the dragon over with it. The only information they have for the party regarding where the leaves are is that that room with the food might have some. Vera takes Eck over to where Ward and Mira are attempting to get through a wooden barrier.

Inside are two corpses, one a humanoid and one a dog-like creature, mostly defleshed and wearing only the remnants of rags. The copious mushrooms in the room appear to be feeding on the remains of the corpse. Ward locates the herb, a faintly glowing vine. Uncertain of how safe it is to grab, Luna retrieves it using her prosthetic arm. Meanwhile, Dorean begins the funeral rites for the killed goblins. She also checks over the bodies in the mushroom room, finding the remains of a traveling pack. There are no identifying marks that she finds, but she does find in a pocket a ring—most likely a wedding ring. It seems sized incorrectly for the body, being made for a larger humanoid like an adult male while the body seems to have been for an adolescent. The situation tugs at part of her memory, though she is unable to pin-point why. Eck, however, recalls a woman at the adventurer's guild inquiring about her missing son who had run away with their dog in search of their missing father. It seems likely that this is that son. The make plans to let the woman know if they can, move the unconscious goblins into the mushroom room, and leave.

As they reach Voldaire, their badges pick up a call. They have to be within range of a leyline tower, typically located near larger settlements, and can call others with badges. It is Cecily checking up on the group and their mission. Train tickets have been purchased for them for that night or the next day. They return to the guild to see if she left her name or address with the guild. The man at the desk tells them that it was Meredith who had submitted the notice, but that she likely wouldn't be in the mood for signing the notice, so he does it for her. He also requests that he be the one to tell her, as someone she knows would be better than some random adventurers who rolled into town that morning; the party agrees.

He gives directions to Crick's place, the closest to a mage's shop the town has. They also have a local tavern, Tappers, which they go to for some supper before deciding whether to head out that night or in the morning. Remembering that Ward has Prestidigitation, Luna requests that he fix her goblin-slobbered hair. They decide to get on the last train of the night. On their way to the train station, Ward requests that the party please try to default to nonlethally dealing with their enemies in the future, as murder being the default is distressing.

The train ride is six hours, and the only other passenger on the train is a half-orc gentleman in a bowler hat. They shuffle into the empty car for the trip, settling down to do some relaxing activities. Vera deposits a knuckle bone with Dorean and goes to sleep, and the others follow suit.

As Ward sleeps, he dreams of a time when he was in a cell, the storm barely audible outside as he tries desperately to get the small iron key on the ground. He hears a voice, mocking him for how his choices have led him here. A foppish man leans against a wall, a memory of a previous event, with the choice to continue the memory or do something else this time. The man continues to mock Ward; Ward decides that he is insane and attempts to ignore the man. "You did this, you wanted this." He says that everything was Ward's fault and vanishes into a swarm of moths. Ward awakes and throws his rapier in a closet.
