Campaign One

Overview

Campaign One was the first in the series of campaigns run by Gloom in recent years. It follows Belxari and Sah in their journey to remove the curse placed on Sah. Along the way they encounter a number of other people who join them for reasons of their own. Over the course of the campaign they face off against demons, liches, would-be gods, and a man in a raven mask, among others. It took place over the course of the year 893 A.C., and set the groundwork for several of the apocalypses threatening the world during Campaign Two.

Characters

Arymicus

Harvest (given name Arymicus) was a human eldritch knight whose desire was to become a lich. He was an apprentice for Vidh Zadh until he joined the party. During the course of his adventures, he received a wish from a djinn, which he used to become a lich. Because of the atypical means used, he was not a typical lich. He was eventually killed in Sunholme by a paladin there. He attempted to make a deal with Orcus to restore him to unlife and was placed inside the body of the paladin he had killed. His ruse was immediately seen through by the man's former companions, and he was killed once more, this time for good. He has since been put into the employ of Orcus, generally being put on guard duty.

Belxari

Belxari was a tiefling bard who, after a deadly disagreement with their troupe leader, left the theatre troupe with her best friend Sah. Initially she intended only to help break the curse on her friend, but over the course of the campaign she had to face a figure from her past, enemies threatening the present, and a god eliminating her future.

Calamus Hallow

Calamus Hallow was a tiefling warlock. He was only around for the first session before the player had to drop due to scheduling issues.

Darius

Darius was a dragonborn druid and paladin who followed Biltar. He wanted to find the enemies that destroyed a town he had grown fond of. He eventually learned that it was nuckelavee, and was given a compass that would direct him to their location. Caius summoned the nuckelavee at a party the group had infiltrated, allowing Darius his chance for revenge at the cost of the lives of many nobles. As Belxari's need for sustenance increasingly became a problem, he offered himself consistently as a source of blood for her. After the campaign, he purchased Crow Peak and set about to cleansing it of its demonic influence. He went missing soon after, and Goon and Seresh took over the task. During Campaign Two it was discovered that he had found his way into the Inner and was protecting the Godforge there. He left the Inner after their encounter with him.

Felicia

Felicia was a human life cleric sent to Mudwall to look for a cure for Emperor Auguste's illness. While searching Crow Peak, shethe party encountered a group of shadow creatures, one of which nearly managed to drag her off. She was able to obtain what she hoped was a cure and took it back to Auguste. Later, the party would encounter her again, this time in the prisons of the castle, as she was betrayed by Elise Auguste who had intentionally made the emperor ill. It was here that it was revealed that she and the shadow creature had encountered each other again and bonded.

Onvaz

Onvaz was a dragonborn cleric of the life domain. He was killed by Renard Blackwood while trying to retrieve a freshly-turned Belxari. His body was taken back to the Platinum Disc, where he was revived and promptly grounded by Bahamut, removing him from the active party.

Sah

Sah was a half-orc totem barbarian. She enjoyed shenanigans, but was frequently the voice of reason in the party. Her father, a human named Sam, was a member of the Fourth Act. He brought home a wife one day, an orc chieftain named Grah. The pairing resulted in Sah, destined to be the world's greatest murder princess. She and Belxari became fast friends, being the only consistent children of approximate age in the troupe. Eventually, Sam disappeared, and later a note arrived explaining that Sah had been cursed by a witch. The only way to break the curse was to find and return to her the Icons of Sin. The letter explained that Sam had been killed seeking them out. Along with the letter was a penny whistle, intended to provide assistance in finding the Icons. When tension between Belxari and troupe leader Sylmore reached a head, the two girls left to continue the search for the Icons. During the two years between their departure and the beginning of campaign one, Sah met a gnome named Zinna with whoms she accidentally began a restaurant, Sinna's.

Over the course of Campaign One, Sah proved to simultaneously be a source of common sense and utter chaos. She ultimately became the "owner" of Mahogany, the group's mimic. She won a rage duck (a goose) from a carnival game at the Mirage Temple. Before she had a chance to name it, however, Onvaz accidentally fed the goose to Mahogany, earning her eternal ire. Xelbari also earned her eternal annoyance when he purchased and hid all of the salt in Wolis. She delivered the final blow to Atoraxia via the Dragoon Spear after Belxari dropped her from several hundred feet in the air onto the would-be Tiamut. She also learned that she had ultimately not actually been cursed, nor had her father been killed. The cultist Caius had encountered him and magically commanded him to seek out the Icons, then rewrote his memory such that he remembered the encounter as angering a witch who placed a curse on his daughter. When he was unable to find the Icons, he faked his death to prevent his wife from finding out that he had "cursed" their daughter.

Sah retired from adventuring to run her restaurant with Zinna. She also opened an orphanage in Wolis, becoming every child's mother. She was among the VIPs on the maiden voyage of the train between Wolis and Taapletwog. She suplexed a tyrannosaurus rex they encountered on the trip.

Tiffany

Tiffany was a kenku gunslinger. He and Belxari stole a gattling gun from Alarius for him to use, which he used to great effect. He also had a pair of magical wings that allowed him to fly, one of his goals in life. The party encountered his sister in the Shadowfell.

Yval

Yval was a human draconic sorcerer and a dancer.

DM NPCs

Chrysa

Chrysa was a silver wyrmling accidentally summoned by and bonded to Belxari in Mudwall. She traveled with the party, eventually taking paladin and sorcerer levels. It was eventually learned that her mother was a silver dragon named Qymrenth and her father was Bahamut. Her siblings had been killed by a red dragon named Atoraxia, for which Chrysa wanted revenge. After a trial by combat, Bahamut and Qymrenth gave their permission for her to continue journeying with the party in pursuit of her revenge; Bahamut loaned her his sword, tYRFING, to help her. She was ultimately able to achieve that revenge when she helped the party kill Atoraxia; her siblings were subsequently resurrected, making her the oldest.

Goon

Goon was a demon who has been banished from hell. He previously worked for the demon prince Graz'zt, and was eventually betrayed after finishing his tasks for him. He stayed in Mudwall, working within a magically protected dome as the town's general smithy. He has a magic hammer and anvil which allows him to quickly and magically repair objects. He was the one who showed the party in campaign one how to use the demon doors, as well as granting them access to the airship in Crow Peak, which they subsequently named the Raqseval. He would travel with them on that airship, acting as engineer and observing how the airship's core handled. After campaign one, he moved into Crow Peak full time, leaving occasionally to work on finding a way to stabilize the core of the demon airship.

Mahagony

Mahogany was a small mimic in the shape of a chest in Crow Peak. The party encountered a larger mimic when trying to clear out and loot the castle. The larger mimic was ultimately defeated and looted. The party approached the next chest with suspicion, but the second mimic was frightened and allowed the party to take its treasure without a fight. The party offered to bring this second mimic along, protect it from other adventurers. This mimic agreed and was named a party member. They referred to the mimic as Mahogany.

Mahogany spent the bulk of her time in the party's Spare Room or on the Raquesval. Over the course of the campaign, Mahogany was used primarily for her enormous appetite. Onvaz mistakenly fed Sah's rage duck to her, earning Sah's ire for the rest of her days. Sah held her above her head as she walked through a room full of creatures that would drop on their victims, consuming them and saving the party from having to deal with them. Mahogany also consumed the bulk of a behemoth, leaving behind the skeleton for the party to harvest, and a beholder the party defeated. As a result of eating these powerful creatures, Mahogany grew an eyestalk and presumably would have continued to grow in power if allowed to continue to eat the party's victims.

Post-campaign, Mahogany went with Sah when she retired. She continued to grow in size until she eventually split off, effectively reproducing asexually. Belxari took the child and traveled with it, using it as a form of armor while seeking a suitable replacement for her original adventuring gear. Mahogany eventually became large and complex enough to become an entire building, may becoming the building Sah's orphanage was located in.

Summary

Crow Peak

Seeking the Icons of Sin to remove a curse from Sah, Belxari and Sah found themselves in Mudwall preparing to journey up the nearby mountain to Crow Peak. They joined up with Lady Felicia, who intended to go to Crow Peak in search for a cure for the ailing emperor of Auguste. After convincing the local goblins to grant them safe passage to the castle and accidentally kidnapping a child, they went to the cursed castle. They cleared it out of most of the dangers, retrieving their first Icon, Gluttony, though he claimed to be Wrath, and obtaining a cure for the Emperor.

Mudwall

Upon returning to Mudwall, they discovered that some of the miners had gone missing, and agreed to go down into the caves to search for them. They found themselves in the Underdark, dealing with drow who had taken the miners as slaves. The matriarch of the drow possessed another of the Icons of Sin, Pride, and agreed to give it to the party in return for assistance in finding some of their own people who had gone missing. They destroyed the monster that was eating her patrols, but the matriarch was killed in the combat. They took the second Icon and, before leaving, helped a man named Gadley retrieve a large crystal. The party went back to town to report their findings. There, they discovered that Richard Dukazel, the owner of the mines, had himself gone missing. The party searched for him, but found that he had been killed by mindflayers. They encountered one of the mindflayers named Zargosa, who asked if they had encountered Gadley and to be informed if they ever did. The party agreed and fled, refusing to help the mindflayer. Belxari used a scroll they had found, a strange version of Find Familiar. The spell summoned a silver wyrmling named Chrysa to their side, who proceeded to travel with them despite the fact that she was like six.

Upon returning to town they discovered that a doppleganger named Darbo had decided to take Dukazel's position. He shut down the mine and decided to open a magic school to provide the town with work. He asked the party to keep an eye out for potential instructors. They also encountered Goon, a demon smith who lived and worked within a protective structure designed to limit the effect of his demonic presence. Goon decided he liked the party and took them back to Crow Peak where he instructed them on the use of the Demon Doors, large silver doors controlled by magical rods such as one the party had discovered in Crow Peak. Behind one such door was an airship created for the demonic incursion during the Calamity 900 years prior. Goon decided to travel with the party to ensure that the airship was safe to use. First, however, he stepped outside in his demon form, which prompted a celestial named Basilicus to descend upon them. After explaining the situation, he agreed to help purify the airship and to the arrangement of Goon's travel with the party. The party completed the paperwork for the airship in Mudwall, naming it the Raquesval — Infernal for "Everyone Dies" — and traveled to Auguste.

Auguste

In Auguste, Felecia left the party, though she was shortly replaced by Yval. The party, invited by Lady Felicia to an event of the royal family, obtained fancy clothes and attended the event, hoping to steal the Empress Elise's crown, the third Icon of Sin, Greed. While there, a group of ninjas attacked, prompting the party to interrupt their own plans. The ninjas turned out to be members of the Fourth Act, having infiltrated the party. Merric, the leader of the attack, revealed to Belxari that it had been intended to be a distraction so they could extract the emperor's grandchildren. What he failed to explain was that they had been hired to rescue them from an attempt on their lives by the empress. They eventually found cause to take over the accidentally interrupted rescue those members of the royal family — the crown prince Stanislas, Margot, and their young children.

The party decided to hide the royal family at Crow Peak. As they journeyed back to Auguste from there, they were assaulted by gnomes riding giant bats and wielding dinosaurs. They had been attacked there twice before already, but this time they were stopped and the party was asked to help them. Their number was slowly being diminished for reasons they could not discern, and hoped for help. The party agreed and landed. They entered the cave the bats lived in, and explored it. They discovered a dragon in the depths, which they successfully defeated. They also encountered Gadley once again. He had located another of the elemental crystals he was collecting, and they agreed to once again help them. After doing so, he wiped their memories, and they forgot they had ever encountered him there. Once again returned to Auguste, the party made an agreement with Empress Elise to retrieve the Moon Pillar from the Mirage Temple in exchange for Greed.

Miscellaneous

The party cleared out a couple of angel fortresses and learned the locations of a few other Icons. They met Tabitha at one of these fortresses and learned the history of several races, including the creation of dragonborn and the founder and emperor of Auguste. For some reason they went to the Platinum Disc and met Chrysa's mom, Qymrenth. The party found another angel fortress, where Belxari activated a machine that reassembled a construct there. The construct, which they encountered several times, they named Seeker, as he had none of his memories and was hoping to recover them. He knew only that Basilicus had been performing some sort of experiments, and that he had been a victim of one of those experiments.

The party was picked up by a functioning angel fortress, where their ship had to be repaired and Goon rescued. They learned that Basilicus was hoping to bring back an old god of some sort, and also that someone was stealing elemental gems, which was disrupting the balance of the world.
